About the event

Clinical Decision-Making in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery: From Infections to Complex Oncologic Challenges

2 CDE/CPD Credits

This focused pre-conference track brings together two critical areas of oral and maxillofacial surgery that demand precise clinical judgment and timely decision-making — the management of odontogenic infections and the treatment of head and neck osteosarcoma. Designed as an intensive session, the program addresses both commonly encountered conditions and complex, high-stakes scenarios that challenge even experienced clinicians.

Participants will explore the full clinical spectrum of odontogenic infections, from localized presentations to rapidly progressive, life-threatening conditions. Emphasis will be placed on early recognition, anatomical pathways of spread, risk assessment, and practical decision-making in management — including when to observe, when to intervene surgically, and when escalation of care is essential.

The session will also examine the unique challenges of head and neck osteosarcoma, highlighting how its biological behaviour and anatomical constraints differ from extremity disease. Through a critical evaluation of current approaches, participants will gain insight into the limitations of standard limb-based protocols and develop a more tailored, site-specific framework for surgical and multidisciplinary management.

Unlike general conference sessions, this track emphasizes real-world clinical reasoning and decision-making under uncertainty. It is designed to support clinicians in navigating complex scenarios with greater clarity, confidence, and precision.

Who should attend

This track is particularly suited for:

• Oral and maxillofacial surgeons
• General dentists involved in surgical care
• Specialists in oral and maxillofacial disciplines
• Postgraduate students and trainees
• Clinicians managing infections and head and neck conditions
• Medical professionals with an interest in surgical management of the maxillofacial region

The program is designed for an international audience and focuses on practical, clinically applicable insights that can be directly translated into patient care.

Registration Information

• Pre-conference tracks may be attended independently or alongside the full conference
• Full-conference registrants receive access to one pre-conference track at no additional cost
• Additional tracks may be registered for separately
• Conference registration is not required to attend a pre-conference track

Odontogenic Infections: From Simple to Life-Threatening

Odontogenic Infections: From Simple to Life-Threatening Odontogenic infections are among the most common conditions encountered in dental practice, yet their clinical behaviour can range from localized, self-limiting processes to rapidly spreading, life-threatening infections. Early recognition and appropriate management are critical in preventing serious complications. This session will explore the spectrum of odontogenic infections, from routine presentations to deep space infections and systemic involvement. Emphasis will be placed on clinical assessment, risk stratification, anatomical pathways of spread, and timely decision-making in management. Participants will gain a practical understanding of when to manage conservatively, when to intervene surgically, and when escalation of care is essential, enabling safer and more effective management of these deceptively complex conditions.

Tailoring Treatment in Head & Neck Osteosarcoma: Why Limb Protocols Fall Short

Tailoring Treatment in Head and Neck Osteosarcoma: Why Limb Protocols Fall Short Head and neck osteosarcoma presents distinct clinical, biological, and therapeutic challenges compared to its extremity counterpart. While treatment protocols for limb osteosarcoma are well established, their direct application to head and neck disease remains controversial. This session will examine the unique behaviour, epidemiology, and metastatic patterns of head and neck osteosarcoma, with emphasis on the complexities of achieving adequate surgical margins in anatomically constrained regions. The roles of surgery, radiotherapy, and chemotherapy will be critically evaluated in light of current evidence and ongoing debates. The discussion aims to provide a practical, site-specific framework for decision-making, enabling clinicians to adopt more tailored and effective management strategies in this challenging disease.
